This hefty English language work offers a detailed survey in words and photos of the art of the ancient Mesopotamian empire, generally in the Tigris & Euphrates River areas of present-day Iraq. The ancient empire flourished in the period from about 5000 B.C. through about 1155 B.C. With 495 black and white photos as well as 62 in full color; many of which fold out to multiple pages. Also included are maps of the regions studied. Translated (presumably from the French) by Stuart Gilbert and James Emmons. An entry in The Arts of Mankind series, edited by noted French author and art critic André Malraux and by Georges Salles. With a lengthy preface by Malraux.
