Jonah Spaulding. A Summary History of Persecution, From the Crucifixion of Our Savior to the Present Time. Hallowell ME: S. K. Gilman, 1819, 1st. printing, 182 pp., Contents (iv). *** This rare religious history is all but unobtainable in book form. The sub-title is as follows -- Containing An Account Of The Rise And Progress Of Several Respective Churches: Fiz. – The Papal . . . . The Waldensean . . . . The Baptist . . . . The Protestant . . . . Friends And Methodist. *** Some of the episodes of persecution reported occurred in Puritan New England. The author's purpose for writing the book was to correct the general ignorance of Christians regarding persecution, and to do so in an inexpensive format that would be accessible to a large audience. *** The original contents are complete except: p. 63/64 has the top corner clipped with the loss of one letter; pages 99-106 were excised from the book at some point (concerning George Fox and Derby). Exact copies of these pages have been re-inserted in the correct location. *** Bound in uncovered boards with a dark brown leather spine. It appears the covers were originally covered with marbled paper. The covers and spine are worn, the joints still strong. The contents are complete except as previously noted, with medium to heavy foxing throughout. Two leafs have chipped corners, but with no loss. The binding is intact with one signature half loose. *** 6.75 inches tall by 4.25 inches. Bookseller Inventory #
