About this title

Synopsis:

Briefly discusses the origin of the Olympic games, who organizes the games today, and the eight events that make up the summer games.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4 An updated version of a 1983 title, The Summer Olympics attempts to explain the games to young children. Beginning with a brief description of the first Olympiad and a short chapter on how the games are organized, the main thrust of the book is to explain the numerous events that are contested every four years. Arnold divides the sporting events into eight categories, such as water sports, track and field, and ball sports, and then gives a brief description of the rules and format of the events that are grouped under the various headings. Some of the events are summarized in as few as three short sentences. While this is a limiting factor, children will still be able to familiarize themselves with each sport and glean a fact or two, such as why staggered starts are used in sprints. This version contains new black-and-white photographs, many from the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and includes descriptions of some of the new events such as rhythmic gymnastics. Arnold does not state that Seoul will be the sight of the 1988 Summer Games. There are also no appendixes of past gold medal winners or event records. The book's main value is as an introduction to the various Olympic sports, rather than as a history or reference source of the Summer Games. Tom S. Hurlburt, Minneapolis Public Library
