Book Description Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis & New York, 1935. Cloth. A very good copy in very good dust jacket with some light edge wear and small nicks. First U.S. edition. A long (877pp) self- proclaimed experimental novel, narrated in real time, in the typographic form of the dust jacket, which prints a long defense of the novel by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck castigates the critics for being. well, critics. It is unlikely that they took seriously its publisher's claim for it being the most successful innovation in fiction since ULYSSES. Somehow, posterity seems to have agreed with the critics (Cyril Connolly proclaimed the book "unreadable"), and the author's chief claim to fame now rests on his leadership of the "Kobo Kift," his advocacy of Social Credit, and his organization of the Green Shirts.
