Gardner, Jr." (there is also a previous owner's name and address notation below). Very good, covers a bit rubbed and with a corresponding notation on the front wrap matching that on the ffep. Memoirs of the Rev. Leonard Marsden Gardner (b. 1831 in Adams County, Pennsylvania). He recalls his childhood and school years, early days in and around Pittsburgh, political campaigns of 1840-44, etc. Included is his account of his involvement in the Battle of Gettysburg--he had gone to Carlisle to attend the commencement at Dickinson College when word of the impending battle was received; he walked back home to York Springs and was present when a Confederate corps encamped there and the sounds of distant artillery fire were heard. He removed to Harrisburg and later visited other clergymen in nthe vicinity of the battle.
