Barclay's comprehensive supplement to Douglas' monumental "Dictionary of the Vernacular or Spoken language of Amoy" (1873), reflecting the growing impact of Western civilisation (the Dictionary "could no longer be considered a sufficient guide"). Scottish missionary Thomas Barclay (1949-1935) moved to Formosa at the encouragement of Douglas, and spent a year being taught the language by him. Barclay oversaw translation of the Bible into Taiwanese, and mediated with the Japanese during Tainan's capitulation in 1895. Rebound in black half leather with grey cloth, all edges red 21 x 27cm. v + 276pp. Contents presented A-Z in double columns with Amoy characters, pronunciation and brief definitions + list of place names. CONDITION: Leather chipped (triangular 1x1cm) to spine tail, short tears to spine head, and rubbed to corners. Boards irregularly faded. Gilt bright. Binding secure. Hinges reinforced with clear tape to front and Japanese paper towards back. Pages near fine and clean, lightly tanned. Top corner of blank ffep cut out, perhaps to remove previous owner details.
