About this title

Six new titles added to the best selling series Radsports Guides. This series describes in accessible language the popularity of some of today's most trendy extreme sports. Safety factors are stressed.

From Booklist:

Reviewed with Tracy Nelson Maurer's ATV Riding.

Gr. 4-6. Combining short bursts of pumped-up prose with small but colorful action photos, these introductions to some of the more physically challenging (which is to say, dangerous) modern sports will stoke armchair athletes and struggling older readers as well as younger jocks looking for new ways to risk life and limb. Though all-terrain vehicles are used for work, too, these books in the Radsports series focus mostly on their recreational possibilities, describing different types of machines and necessary gear for both excursions and racing. Maurer does the same for surfing, "the big kahuna of extreme sports," adding snippets of historical background. Discouraging but not prohibiting freestyle tricks in both books, she briefly describes a few ("Cliffhanger. Insanity Level: 11 out of 10."), then closes by naming some prominent professionals, and citing popular books, magazines, and Web sites. A line in Surfing--"Risk wisely. Rip it freely."--sums up the approach and the general tone of these primers; they shouldn't be the last words on their respective topics, but they could be the first. John Peters
