Description:

Quarto. [4], 47, [1]pp (text), [8]pp (Illustrations). Uncut. Original printed wrappers. Scarce first issue of "Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution" (Surrealism in the service of the revolution), a French periodical issued by the Surrealist Group in Paris between 1930 and 1933. It was the successor of "La Révolution Surréaliste" (published 1924-29) and proceeded the primarily surrealist publication "Minotaure" (1933 to 1939). After the writing of his "Second Manifesto of Surrealism" (1929), which announced the expulsions of several prior surrealists due to theoretical differences, André Breton and his supporters developed a new, more politically charged publication. This first issue of "Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution was published in June 1930," and was followed by five more issues through 1933. Contributors included André Breton, Paul Éluard, René Crevel, Tristan Tzara, Salvador Dalí, René Char, Benjamin Péret, Louis Aragon, and Luis Buñuel, among others. This issue, printed on a beautiful watermarked paper, features writings by André Breton, Paul Éluard, René Crevel, Tristan Tzara, Salvador Dalí, René Char, Benjamin Péret, Aragon, Georges Sadoul, Marcel Fourrier, Maxime Alexandre, André Thirion, Jacques Viot, and Albert Valentin. Illustrations include stills from Buñuel's film "L'Âge d'Or," paintings by Dalí, a b/w photographic reproduction by Man-Ray, and a photograph of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky performing with Death in the film "Celui qui n'est pas né pour l'argent" (Not for Money Born). Spine missing, and covers detached. Closed tears and minor and sporadic chipping along edges of wrappers. Book block detached and splitting. Upper corner of pp. 31/32 has been professionally reattached. Text in French. Wrappers in overall poor to fair, interior in good to very good condition. Highlights include "Dors" (Sleep) by Paul Eluard; "Il y aura une fois" (There Will Be Times) by Breton; "Mort, maladie et littérature" (Death, Disease and Literature) by René Crevel; and a commentary by Breton about the death of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky.
