About this Item

This is the catalogue of an EXHIBITION of 86 pieces of surrealist art that was mounted in Fort Worth, Texas and appeared there in September through November in 1985. (It was at Glenbow in Calgary - March to May of '86.) Artists such as Ernst, Arp, Picasso, Dali and Miro are represented - also A. Calder, S.W. Hayter and Andre' Masson. The catalogue is 96 pages long incl. all the `appendices' : List of Trustees, artists' bio's, and full list of exhibited works - which includes sizes and provenance. Most of the illustrations are in B/W - though Klee, Matta and Miro (e.g.) have colour pieces. THREE essays by Wye, Upright and Castleman lead off the volume with ideas on the impact of the movement. Cond : Paper wrapper is very light grey w/ black lettering spine and front cover. Joan Miro's ` Acrobats in the Night Garden' was chosen for the cover. Problematic wrinkling in front cover but it doesn't translate through to even the pre-tile. Spine fine, corners and edges mostly sharp. Colours bright, binding tight. Clean. No names, marks nor tears. Collectible reference !! Quote (p. 10) (Wye) : " The etched `Five Figures' , in contrast, depicts a more abstracted group of figures wherein the individual is reduced to a calligraphic sign, yet retains a semblance of personhood. These amoeboids function as the evocative Surrealist personages so often seen in Miro's work. The individualized biomorphic . .". Bookseller Inventory # 003653
