About this Item

Sm. 4to. [xii], 60, 69-86 pp. Complete, though lacks M2-4 [blanks]. Dis-bound. Title-page lightly stained with right edge slightly chipped, p. 86 text misaligned so that the heading and page number are truncated. Ink holograph "Sunday Sorts 2" on title, title outer margin chipped. Good. RARE. The Church of England became embroiled in the "Bangorian Controversy" from 1717-1721, a theological argument with political overtones, over whether God actually granted kings divine right, or whether, as the Whigs claimed, leaders were not intrinsically superior to their subjects, and God granted revelation freely as he saw fit. The debate began when Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Bangor, delivered a sermon entitled "The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ" claiming the latter on March 31, 1717. "Thomas Dawson, one of the Committee of Convocation, had, like Hoadly, written against Hickes' Constitution of the Catholick Church in 1716, appealing to the royal supremacy. A moderately Erastian tory, he was accused by Hoadly of promoting Hobbism in his Suspiria Sacra, a charge which he turned back against Hoadly but of which he did not entirely clear himself" (Starkie, p. 70).
