About this Item

Translated from the French by Henry Longan Stuart. With woodcut decorations by Harry Cimino. A Near Fine copy in black cloth over gold coated paper covered boards (now somewhat rubbed), in a Very Good green, brown, black and orange dustwrapper (faded at spine, with minor edgewear to points). 179pp. Though not well enough known in America, Cendrars is highly coveted in France, where his first editions command impressive premiums. Sutter's Gold (originally L'Or in France, published in 1925) is a novel about Johann August Sutter, a Swiss immigrant on whose land gold was first discovered in California in 1848. This copy bears the bookplate of Jean Hersholt on the front pastedown. Hersholt, it will be remembered, was the well-known and admired Danish-American film actor and director [1886-1956], whose career spanned the silent era all the way through the early days of network television, starring in such landmarks efforts as Grand Hotel (1932), Heidi (1937, with Shirley Temple), von Stroheim's Greed (1924), etc. Hersholt produced landmark translations of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (and starred in a series of movies about him near the end of his film career) into English. Pasted to the rear pastedown is the sticker of Hollywood Book Store "opposite Hollywood Hotel" (the landmark on Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Orchid Avenues, which counted among its patrons many of the most famous figures from the heydays of Hollywood (Harry Warner, Irving Thalberg, Louis B. Mayer, etc.). Torn down in 1956, it is the present site of the Hollywood and Highland Center, the home of the Academy Awards. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given periodically to an individual's outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes; it is named after Hersholt, who served as president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund for 18 years. Might Hersholt actually have purchased his copy of this book at the Hollywood Book Store, when it first appeared? Who can say? Q05208. Bookseller Inventory # Q05208
