About this Item

Magisterial volume some 3 in. thick with over 1000 pages of fine printing. Sturdy and very firm practical binding in thick black boards with gilt title. Phonetic order of characters with their English definitions. Significantly, the volume is from the British War Office Library (withdrawn by the Ministry of Defence at some later date) being purchased in September, 1906, soon after the Boxer Movement/Rebellion (Yihetuan Movement) hostilities. The title-page carries all the appropriate library stamps relating to purchase and withdrawal as do the front binding end-papers but we can see no other stamping throughout the volume which is clean and remarkably fresh each page being bordered and the text sharp with no obvious toning.Slight kink to the top corner of the last eighty pages with a little resulting dustyness there but quite insignificant. The Preface is signed S.W.W. and "United States Legation, Peking, June, 1874". There is a 73 page Introduction full of tables of characters, radicals, pronunciation etc. An additional printed list of Chinese surnames is tipped-in at the back. [i-v], vi-lxxxiv, [1], 2-1248. All edges speckled in red. A magnificent volume and a credit to the American Presbyterian Mission Press who produced it. Very heavy, please enquire about postage costs. 10% PRICE REDUCTION APPLIED.
