A beautiful set of Bayntun full red morocco bindings for Carroll's final classic! WIth the original cloth boards and spines bound in. 8vo. 18.5 by 13 cm. xxiii, 400, xxxi, 423 pp. (Without ads.) These are ex-library in the lightest, and least intrusive manner thus that few would consider that status much of a demerit. Both volumes have the bookplate the College of the Holy Names on their front endpapers -- this bookplate resembles essentially that of a private collector. The spines have the faintest trace that there once was a code or call number lettering there -- the tiny spot(s) are only visible under the brightest of light. On the title page there is in the upper corners the institution's name blindstamped onto the page in small lettering -- this is quite inconspicuous. And finally, on the copyright page there is a small stamped number, again something that can easily escape one's notice. From the beauty and condition of the binding, we would conjecture that the set was donated to the college by a collector or his estate, and once in the college's hands, was virtually never touched.
