About this Item

(Same imprint, date for all). Black cloth with minor decorations in blind. Gilt titling to the spine. 7 ¾ by 5 inches. 219, 215, 212 pp. Two works on the history of popes and their actions, anti-pope in tone and citing historical events of papal misdeeds and atrocities (committed in the name of the pope). William Hogan was an Irish born priest, immigrating to the United States in the early 1800's and leader of the St. Mary's Parish in Philadelphia. Suspended by Bishop Henry Cornwell, Hogan became involved in what is known as the 'Hogan Schism' in which his parish members came to his defense in spite of the bishop's inclinations. Hogan was excommunicated in 1821 and eventually became a voice in the anti-Catholic movement. He was also known for his poor treatment of his two wives, being brought to trial for the assault and battery of one. (see Wikipedia and Harvard University library archives). FAIR condition. Both covers with cloth tape along their entire hinges. Heavy fading, minor to moderate uneven soiling and scuffing to the covers. Cloth frayed and worn along the extremities. Scattered minor foxing, soiling and staining in the interior. Text block cracked and beginning to separate at pages 166/67 of the first volume of Auricular Confession. Bookseller Inventory # 006628
