About this Item

Extracted from the Transactions of the Linnean Society. 4to. (276 x 215 mm) pp. 323-392. Modern half calf over blue marbled boards. Fine. British conchologist Jeffreys was born at Swansea where he began collecting sea shells in his early life, receiving his first lessons in the subject from Griffiths, the headmaster at Swansea grammar school. "Jeffreys had a keen eye for minute distinctions, with an excellent memory, and the methodical habits of a good man of business. He wrote more than one hundred papers on scientific subjects, the first of which, A Synopsis of the Pneumobranchous Mollusca of Great Britain, appeared in the Linnean Society's 'Transactions' for 1828."
