Synopsis: A simple introduction to the geography, history, resources, economy, government, culture, and people of the southwestern Asian country whose coastal region was once part of ancient Phoenicia.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4 These books follow the same format as others in the series: reproductions of the flag (uncaptioned) on the title page, a brief listing of statistical and other information (currency, religion, main cities, etc.) on the verso, and handsomely reproduced color photographs. Unfortunately, the texts never rise above the level of a good encyclopedia article, and the titles are not uniformly good. Of these four, Jamaica is the least successful. Beside the usual metric measures (translated in parentheses), Lye also uses some English spellings and phrases, e.g., molasses is defined as "thick treacle." The government is identified as a monarchy under Britain's Queen, represented by a Governor-General, but Lye does not mention the Commonwealth, and says "the Prime Minister is the head of the government" but doesn't mention Parliament. Other parts of the text read like a travel brochure. Nicaragua, Nepal, and Syria are all more matter-of-fact in presentation. None ignore the problems of poverty and illiteracy in these Third World nations, and Nicaragua does mention the civil war and its effects, and even includes a picture of a Contra camp. Syria briefly mentions conflicts with Israel, but does not discuss causes. World Book or the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations offer children as much, if not more, solid information.
