About this Item

22x14cm, xiv,271 pp. Contents :Caesar at the Rubicon -- Massilian compilation -- Ilerda -- Appius and the Delphic oracle -- The Thessalian excursus -- Erictho -- The endlessness of the Civil War ["Lucan is the wild maverick among Latin epic poets: sneered at for over a century for failing to conform to humanist canons of taste and propriety, in recent years his work has been gaining in reputation. Poetry and civil war in Lucanís íBellum Civileí is a book founded on a genuine admiration for Lucanís unique, perverse and spellbinding masterpiece." "Above all, argues Dr. Masters, the poem is obsessed with civil war, not only as the subject of the story it tells, but as a metaphor which determines the way that story is told. In these pages, he discusses in detail a number of selected episodes from the poem which illustrate this principle, and on this basis he offers a fresh and challenging perspective on most of the important issues in Lucanian studies--Lucanís political stance and his attitude to Caesar, his iconoclastic relation to Virgil and the epic tradition, his distortion of history and geography, his inconsistency, his self-destructive narrative technique and, finally, the apparent incompleteness of his poem." "This book is a major re-evaluation, provocative and persuasive, of a central figure in the history of Latin epic" - from dustwrapper. Small dent to cover. Some light cover soil. VG. About this title

Synopsis:

This book is a major literary reevaluation of Lucan's epic poem, the Bellum Civile ("The Civil War"). Its main purpose is to bring out the implications of one basic premise: this poem is not only about civil war, but uses the metaphor of civil war (i.e. self-destruction and internal discord) as the basis for the way it tells its story. Aimed primarily at classicists, the book offers a provocative new interpretation of most of the important issues in the poem, while attempting to avoid the glibness of generalization by concentrating on detailed readings of selected parts of the text.
