About this Item

Two cartes de visite of the early Seminole teacher John D. Bemo (ca. 1825-1890) by Hilliard of Philadelphia. 4 1/8 x 2 1/8 inches. Ca. 1860s-1870s. Slight fading to one image, else very good. One picture shows Bemo in white man's clothes of the day; in the other he is dressed in traditional Seminole costume, a turban on his head and wearing a fringed and decorated jacket. Bemo, a member of the Seminole tribe and nephew of Osceola, was born about 1825 in Florida; at about age 10 he was abducted by sailors at St. Augustine, serving as a cabin boy and ended up in the care of Rev. Orson Douglas, Pastor of the Mariner's Church in Philadelphia. He was educated and sent to the Seminole Nation in Indian Territory as a teacher, where he headed the first Seminole School, the Oak Ridge Mission in 1843. He married a Creek woman and taught for many years in Creek schools, living near Muskogee until his death in 1890. Bookseller Inventory # 19153
