About this title

Synopsis:

Robert A. McKennan (1903-1982) spent 1929 to 1933 in several remote Native villages where he documented Interior Athabaskan life. His writings are an extraordinary window onto Athabaskan culture before World War II and form a significant part of anthropology's humanistic tradition.

Editors Mishler and Simeone have annotated McKennan's journals and provided a wealth of contextual material in two substantive introductory chapters. Readers will appreciate this rare perspective on a vanishing way of life.

About the Author:

CRAIG MISHLER received his doctorate in anthropology and folklore from the University of Texas. He is the author or editor of several books on northern anthropology, including Han, People of the River (University of Alaska Press, 2004, co-authored with William E. SIMEONE has been a VISTA volunteer, a paralegal, a laborer on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, and an anthropologist working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. In 1990, he received a Ph.D. in anthropology from McMaster University. He co-authored, with Craig Mishler, Han, People of the River (University of Alaska Press, 2004).
