About this Item

London and New York 1908. first edition. Macmillan. Hardcover. large 4to. On p. 105-106 in this volume Shelford Bidwell relays the excitement at recent developments in electric photography "The success achieved by Dr. A Kornin, the telgraphic transmission of photographs has been followed by a remarkable development of inventive activity in the same line." He continues "The problem of telegraphic photography is often associated in the popular mind with that of distant electric vision or seeing by electricity" and he goes on to describe how it might be done, how very difficult, impractical and overly costly it would be. Then on p. 151 A A Campbell Swinton sends in a letter replying to Bidwell describing the difficulties even more precisely but stating that "distant electric vision" (ie, television) will eventually succeed: "Possibly no photoelectric phenomenon at present known will provide what is required in this respect, but should something suitable be discovered, distant electric vision will, i think, come within the region of possibility." 3/4 cordovan cloth with yellow and brown marbled boards. No ownership marks except two small contemporary university name stamps. paginated xliv, 1-628p. Almost no wear at all. Binding very secure; text clean and bright. VG just slight cover wear.
