About this Item

First Edition. 8vo, publisher’s original stiff green paper wrappers printed on the upper cover in red. 30 pp. plus publisher’s ads. A fine copy of this fragile item but for some faint old damp staining along the top margin of some leaves. FIRST EDITION. A radical statement on the on the plight of southern tenant farmer from a time when they could hope to earn on average less then 35 cents a day. Caldwell, best known for the novel TOBACCO ROAD, paints a bitter picture of the social conditions during the Great Depression. He expresses especial contempt for Eugene Talmadge, who was then governor of Georgia. This was the first of the publisher’s planned series of pamphlets by prominent authors on current social and economic problems, we can find no evidence that any others were ever printed.
