Almeida Garrett, (Porto, 1799 - Lisboa, 1854), batizado como João Leitão da Silva, o autor só mais tarde acrescentou ao seu nome o patronímico Baptista (em honra do padrinho) e os apelidos Almeida Garrett (o primeiro da avó materna; o segundo da avó paterna, de origem irlandesa) que o haviam de imortalizar na política, cultura e literatura portuguesas. Nos anos do cabralismo (1842 ? 1851) e seguintes, afastado da política, frequenta a sociedade elegante e escreve as peças Tio Simplício, Falar Verdade a Mentir. Em 1848 é representada no Teatro de D.
