Description:

Full title: A THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY, CONTAINING DEFINITIONS OF ALL RELIGIOUS TERMS; A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF EVERY ARTICLE IN THE SYSTEM OF DIVINITY, AN IMPARTIAL ACCOUNT OF ALL THE PRINCIPAL DENOMINATIONS WHICH HAVE SUBSISTED IN THE RELIGIOUS WORLD FROM THE BIRTH OF CHRIST TO THE PRESENT DAY: TOGETHER WITH AN ACCURATE STATEMENT OF THE MOST REMARKABLE TRANSACTIONS AND EVENTS RECORDED IN ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY. "New American, from the latest London edition. Revised and improved by the addition of many new articles, and the whole adapted to the present state of theological science and of the religious world. By the Rev. George Bush, A.M. . . . Corrected edition" (all as stated upon title page). 472 pages. Hardcover: H 22.75cm x L 15.25cm. Original dark leather boards but with old repair of re-backed cloth spine which is stained lengthwise and with frayed ends, lacks a spine title label. Leather which overlaps the cloth repair is stained and somewhat brittle; boards rubbed with corners worn. Front and rear hinges are splitting but binder apparently used an adhesive between the spine cloth and quire's backstrip so that binding remains fairly firm. Browning and foxing on preliminary and terminal leaves; mostly moderate foxing upon interior leaves. Missing at least a front free endpaper, front flyleaf, and a rear flyleaf. Initial two leaves present are the frontispiece and title/copyright pages and both are loose and now laid-in. Frontis features two illustrations denoted as Plates III and IV; Plates I and II are not present. All other illustrations (also printed two per page) inclusive to Plate XVI are present. Text collates as complete and concludes with five appendices titled as "Methodist Episcopal Church in America," "Presbyterian Church in the United States," "The Methodist Protestant Church; Comprising the Associated Methodist Churches," "Baptists of the United States," and "Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States." A fair antiquarian copy of a standard 19th century theological reference. Bookseller Inventory #
