Presumed first edition (single copyright statement upon title page verso). 177 pages. Hardcover: H 15.4xm x L 9.9cm. Original quarter leather binding; black leather spine with marbled paper boards. Spine ends scuffed with small chip at head and small chip at lower front joint, some surface nicks to spine leather as well but with spine's gilt stamping still quite bright. Varied foxing throughout mostly mild but occasionally moderate to strong; pencil and antiquarian ink inscription on front free endpaper followed by pencil inscription on front flyleaf both dated for 1872; particularly strong toning to unpaged b/w frontispiece and b/w plate on unpaged leaf between pages 92-93; bottom corner of pages 51-52 creased from past fold-in; pencil writing on slender stub of otherwise removed rear free endpaper.
