AVEC GRAVURES. DÉDIÉ À LA SOCIÉTÉ ÉTABLIE À GENÈVE POUR L'ENCOURAGEMENT DES ARTS, DE L'AGRICULTURE ET DU COMMERCE. PAR P.F. TINGRY . . . TOME PREMIER. , i-xlviii, 1-322 pages (missing pages 323-326 and a concluding errata as called for by OCLC). Hardcover: H 21.25cm x L 12.75cm. Original full leather binding; spine decorated with gilt tooled compartments and maroon labels with gilt lettered title and volume number; spine ends chipped; leather boards have a muted dark speckled pattern (usually an embellishment seen on contemporary Spanish binding rather than French or Swiss) which are worn at corners; front board also has slender surface leather loss along its bottom edge. Blue marbled endpapers with ink staining; past owner's pencil notes on front free endpaper verso and again on opposing half-title; scrawled antiquarian ink signature of printer/publisher G.J. Manget on title page verso following a copyright protection statement; mostly light foxing to interior pages with occasional light moisture stains and some scattered antiquarian ink markings mostly as sweeping lines of varied thickness across text and most obtrusive on pages 250-251. Binding is still firm. Plates on unpaged leaves: #1 as foldout and #2 as single-page (both bound-in between pages 56-57), #3 as foldout (between 58-59), #4 as single-page (between 194-195), but only a stub of Plate #5 present between pages 272-273. Tables on pages 299 and 314. Poor condition per the aforementioned missing leaves and plate and thus sold as is. This book was obtained from the Braswell estate of Demopolis, Alabama which on the maternal side had an ancestor among the Marengo Country French settlers involved with the Vine and Olive Colony (aka Society for the Cultivation of the Vine and Olive and Société de Vin et de l'Olive), an 1817 congressionally sanctioned land grant to a group of French Bonapartists who sought to establish an agricultural settlement based on cultivating wine grapes and olive trees in the Alabama wilderness. It would be reasonable that a colonist would have brought a copy Tingry's book to their New World settlement as it was a landmark treatise in their native tongue on the chemistry and composition of paint/varnish. Alas, however, as there is no ownership signature or bookplate, any such direct attribution can only be moderately speculative rather than absolutely certain. There was a single-volume English-language edition of Pierre Tingry's book published under the title "The Painter and Varnisher's Guide; or, a Treatise, Both in Theory and Practice, on the Art of Making and Applying Varnishes, on the Different Kinds of Painting; and on the Method of Preparing Colours Both Simple and Compound . . ." in 1804 in London.
