About this Item

First edition. With 32 illustrations from photographs by the author and a fold-out map. 8vo, publisher’s original tan cloth lettered and ruled in gilt on the spine. xii, 330, index + [4] ads. A fine copy. FINE AFRICANA FROM A WELL-TRAVELLED MISSIONARY. By the time Roome published TRAMPING THROUGH AFRICA in 1930, he was already a well-seasoned author and traveller, having published CAN AFRICA BE WON?, THROUGH CENTRAL AFRICA, A GREAT EMANCIPATION, and LIGHT AND DARKNESS IN EAST AFRICA. This account is made up from notes taken during Roome’s twelve separate crossings of the African continent in all four directions, detailing daily occurrences and "such happenings and observations as seemed to be of interest at the time." Among other places, Roome leads us up Kilamanjaro, across Tanganyika, into the Congo’s "primeval forest," and through Nyasaland into Rhodesia. Trusting and confident, Roome feels at home on the African continent: "An African traveller is supposed to carry firearms, and one of the questions most frequently asked me has been ‘What guns do you carry?’ I have never carried any nor ever felt in need of them." A well-preserved copy of this expansive personal travel narrative. Bookseller Inventory # 16921
