About this Item

Muenchen 1902. Unique book - a fully manuscript work by Courten. Title page is full black ink design and lettering by Courten. The book consists of 7 elaborate and finely draw ink pictures which tell, one by one, a sad tale of parted lovers. Each original drawing is labeled (in German) and signed by Courten. Artwork appears on rectos only of each sheet of the book. The album is bound like a regular hardcover book in grey cloth with gilt lettering and gilt lines which mirror the lines of the title page. Book is 8 x 6 inches; 21 x 15 cm. Laid in book: one original watercolour and ink drawing of a Gibson-type girl which is signed by Courten ("A.C.") and dated 1902. Also laid in: ** Hand written ink letter from Courten and signed by him written to Miss Florence Scofield, Yokohama, Japan. Letter is dated 1905. The letter is in its original envelope with stamp, cancel and postmark. From the story line of the pictures, it seems possible the book was drawn by the lovesick Courten to amuse Miss Scofield. Near Fine. Courten, listed in Benezit, was born in Bologne in 1848 and died in 1925. A wonderful item by a fine artist. Bookseller Inventory # a87151
