Description:

An early printing of this edition. Impressively illustrated with 20 drawings in pen and ink by Adrian de Friston and with 11 photogravure plates, as well as cartographic endleaves. 8vo, publisher's original sea-blue cloth, large gilt device in Chinese motif on the upper cover, the spine gilt lettered and decorated in a maritime motif. xviii, 461 pp. A fine copy, a bit of offsetting to the endpapers or prelims as is typical, the cloth unusually bright and clean and the binding strong and solid. An admirable edition of Marco Polo's travels with copious explanatory notes. The translation is Marsden's as revised by Thomas Wright. Marco Polo's travels--the saga of his journey to, and service in, the court of Kublai Khan and his travels to various Chinese provinces in official capacity--remains the chief authority for parts of Central Asia and the vast Chinese Empire, six centuries after it was written. "Some of his wanderings are hard to follow; some of the places which he visited are hard to identify; but the labour of Colonel Yule has cleared up most of the difficulties, and confirmed most of the strange statements. To the geographer, to the historian, and to the student of Asiatic life, the book of Marco Polo will always be most valuable. To the general reader, the great charm of the book is its romance.".
