An Essay on the Education of the Eye, [2] + viii + [iv] + 73 pp.; Practical Hints on Composition in Painting, 31 pp.; Practical Hints on Light and Shade in Painting, [vi] + [ii] + 44 pp.; Practical Hints on Colour in Painting, ix + [i] + 64 pp. + 4 pp. publisher's list of New Works. Each part has separate title page, pagination and register. Some half titles may have been omitted by original binder. Rebound in quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt, with new endpapers; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting black morocco title label, gilt. Occasional traces of spotting, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 32 copperplates, protected by tissue guards, including 8 hand coloured and by 5 text figures. The four parts of the treatise on the theory of painting, by The Scottish artist John Burnet (1784-1868), Scottish artist of portraits, landscapes and rural genre scenes. He moved to London in 1806 and frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. The parts were also issued separately and appeared to have been published together in three parts about 1827. In a handsome recent binding with over thirty copperplates, including eight hand coloured in the last section.
