About this Item

The combined talents of two great naturalists -- Matthiessen, the writer, and Porter, the photographer -- has resulted in a book unlike any other on the human and natural history of East Africa. Both artists roamed the ancient land of man's origins and created parallel statements, one in words and one in color photographs that, brought together, is one of the classic works on Africa. 9.75 x 11.5 inches; 247 pages with more than a hundred full color photos, as well as an index, notes and selected bibliography. True First Printing, First Edition with dark brown cloth covers and two prices in upper corner of dustjacket's front flap. Inside covers and endpapers show some light foxing in the margins, and top edge of text also lightly foxed. O/w, covers and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The lower corner of the dj's front flap is clipped and the dustjacket shows wear along the edges and corners with a one-inch closed tear at the bottom of spine on the fold between the dj's back panel and the spine. There is some light age-tanning on the dj's obverse, o/w the dj is whole and currently Brodart protected. A collectable copy at a reasonable price. About this title

In this classic volume, Peter Matthiessen exquisitely combines nature and travel writing to bring East Africa to vivid life. He skillfully and magically portrays the sights, scenes, and people he observed firsthand in several trips over the course of a dozen years: the daily lives of herdsmen and hunter-gatherers; the drama of the predator kills; the hundreds of exotic animals; the breathtaking landscapes; the area's turbulent natural, political, and social histories; the adventures of the field biologists who pursue and investigate the habits of wild creatures; the anthropologists seeking man's origins throughout the Rift Valley; and the lonely African, poised between the traditional ways and the conflicting demands of Western culture.
