About this Item

Lovecraft appears in the issue as one of the subjects of James F. Morton's essay - "ORATER DICTA" - a sarcastic commentary upon Lovecraft's zealousness in finding & correcting errors: " Far be it from me to resent the discreet jubilation of Mr. Lovecraft in the January, TRYOUT. An error is an error no matter how inadvertant; and I find no alibi at my disposal. `All that I can do is cry, "Peccavi!" and to congratulate Mr. Lovecraft on his marvellous acumen which has enabled him to discover the astonishing fact that Persia is not in Europe and the noble zeal which has impelled him to lose no time in imparting the information to the amateur world, otherwise certain to have been fatally mislead by my criminal carelessness. For Mr. Lovecraft's closing sneer at a religious philosophy of which he confesses himself to be totally ignorant . I feel the complete tolerance due to a mind to which all things modern are unworthy of contemplation . . . " Well certainly there could be a touch of "sour grapes" here but at the same time Morton's comments when taken with others at this same time - Edward Cole's for instance in the 1917 copy also offered in this listing of, THE OLYMPIAN - point to the fact that Lovecraft's extreme conservatism would've put him comfortably within the philosophy of those we deem today - The "TEA PARTY". Note also that this young rather inexperienced Lovecraft would mellow somewhat and those barbs of his personality would smooth out; people like James Morton would become some of his closest friends! Store Description

Who am I and Why buy from me? How many times have you ordered a book on eBay only to return it because it wasn't a first edition or in the condition stated? I'm Terence McVicker. I began collecting Fantasy & Science fiction in 1970 and opened my own brick & mortar shoppe in 1976 under the name, The Book Symposium, in Anaheim, California. I closed the shoppe long ago and since have been selling under my own name and on eBay under the moniker of epagana. I mentored for fifteen years under the noted bookman Roy A. Squires, specializing in Fantasy & Science Fiction and in my more than forty years of collecting & selling I have dealt with virtually every major bookseller in the field from Gerry de la Ree to Lloyd Currey. . . and I have learned much! I have sold to and appraised collections for the John Hay Library, Brown University's H.P. Lovecraft Collection and the Bancroft Library, University of Southern California, Berkeley's Clark Ashton Smith Collection and numerous individual clients. I worked with Ray Bradbury & Gary Gianni on Ray's last book - The Nefertiti-Tut Express which I designed and published in 2012 as The RAS PRESS. I have a forty year plus, reputation in the field for integrity, expertise and professionalism that I take great pride in: In other words, everything I sell I know to be authentic and I stake my reputation upon it. And everything sold is guaranteed to be delivered to you in the condition stated or your money back. If your shipment is damaged, then I haven't done my job! It's not the fault of the post office. And I guarantee this worldwide! Let eBay sellers better that! I look forward to having you as my client! - Terence McVicker
