About this Item

While Associate editor of Macmillan's Educational Department, Michener suggested Mrs. Ella-Frances Barker as one of the authors in a proposed series of geography books for children. Mrs. Barker did not have time to complete the assignment and, unbeknownst to Michener, turned the project over to her young son. The first letter, dated December 30, 1946, is warm and chatty, signed "Jim Michener" and proposes a meeting between Professor and Mrs. Barker and Michener's managing editor, Philip Knowlton. The second letter, dated April 16, 1947, is written after receipt of the manuscript. Diplomatic and decidedly business-like (with not-so-subtle hints that the manuscript is not exactly up to par) it is signed "James A. Michener." Both letters are typed on Macmillan letterhead; the first on a single sheet, the second on two. The first has a very light stain at the head of the page, and light creasing where previously folded into sixths, but is otherwise fine and includes the original mailing envelope. The second letter is a little darkened and lightly creased along the edge of the first page, but is otherwise fine. Bookseller Inventory # 24926
