About this Item
Two pages, on recto and verso of oblong octavo lettersheet, with small corrections in red pencil. Folded for mailing, otherwise near fine. A significant letter to"Dear Andrew" [Crozier], opening: "It is typical of Kenneth R[exroth] to announce to others that I am writing a preface for a book I didnt at the time even know was in existence. However, I was at Jay Laughlin's recently and he showed me the Mss of Rakosi's book and I liked most of what I read a lot . I liked many just as much as Reznikoff's - sometimes there is something reminiscent of Mina Loy too, but again, I like her, and it is certainly absurd that Rackosi [sic] shd go unpublished .I told Jay if he does the book . I will be willing to try and write something about it ." Levertov further responds about the then status of the Wesleyan Univ. Press poetry series: "I am no longer on the board of Wesleyan UP as I was for a time and have no influence there - in fact no one has, it is, (tho an unweildy [sic] enterprise where no one, noone [sic], gets what they really want, at least hardly ever,) at least a strikingly honest concern ." She indicates that if JL decides against publishing Rakosi's collection as a New Directions title, she would tell two of the poets on the Wesleyan committee about it. She closes: "Good wishes, this roundabout way, to Rakosi; and to yourself. Denise." The book, AMULET, was published by ND in 1967 and Levertov contributed an important jacket blurb. The book was dedicated by Rakosi to Crozier, who had been instrumental in his return to writing poetry. Crozier was the editor of several of the later collections of Rakosi's work. An excellent literary letter, ca. 350 words. Seller Inventory # WRCLIT88421
