About this title

Synopsis:

Describes the varieties, habitats, behavior, and physical characteristics of snakes

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- This colorfully illustrated introduction avoids most of the pitfalls common to such simplified nonfiction. Maestro introduces her readers to the snake's body, behavior, and life cycle in clear, concise statements, aptly expanded by the detailed pictures of over 30 types of snakes. There are diagrams of the different ways in which they move, cutaway pictures showing the skeleton and internal organs, and, of course, the requisite closeup of poisonous fangs. Readers will be intrigued by the world map color-coded to show their ``Chance of meeting a dangerous snake,'' and will be surprised at how rare these opportunites are in most locations. This, in fact, is Maestro's basic point; she succeeds admirably in showing how fascinating snakes are, and how, in most cases, they are beneficial to humankind. The one flaw is her dismissal of hibernation as ``very deep sleep''; surely a better explanation is possible even at this level. Similar material for this age group appears in Lauber's Snakes Are Hunters (Crowell, 1988), but Maestro's superior illustrations and clarity of presentation make this book a worthwhile purchase. --Ruth S.
