About this title

Synopsis:

Few accounts of the tank battles in the Western Desert during the Second World War have provided so vivid an evocation of armoured warfare in such inhospitable conditions, warfare of a particularly difficult and dangerous kind. From 1940 to 1943 the battles raged back and forth as one side or the other gained the upper hand, only to lose it again; for most of the time the British armour (of which a great deal was obsolescent or plain obsolete) was either outnumbered by the Italians or outgunned by Rommel's Afrikakorps, while occasionally suffering the ineptitudes of higher command.

Highly praised when it was published in 1955, this is a first-hand narrative of these campaigns as scan through the eyes of a young officer in the 7th Armoured Division, the famous Desert Rats. Take These Men tells of fortitude in hardship, courage in the face of odds, of great events that are a legitimate source of pride to those who endured them.

'A vivid and accurate piece of reporting' The Literary Supplement

`As observation and as writing it is exceptional' Manchester Guardian

`Carries us back into the atmosphere of the Western Desert Kith an almost uncanny waft of sight and smell ... a remarkable saga of armour: the first of its genus, the best of its species' Bernard Fergussun.. Sunday Times
