About this title

North American sociologist Paula Palmer collaborated with two indigenous Bribri women to produce this unique oral history of the Bribri people, inhabitants of Costa Rica's Atlantic rainforests. Elders share the traditional knowledge that defines them as a people who "take care of Sibo's gifts" -- the sacred gifts of flora and fauna. As they tell how their lives depend on rainforest resources, the Bribri people appeal to us all to support them in their struggle to preserve their forests and their way of life.

About the Author:

Paula Palmer is a North American sociologist who lived on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast from 1973 to 1993. There she helped Afro-Caribbean and indigenous Bribri communities analyze and publish their own accounts of their histories and aspirations as unique peoples. Since 1996 she is executive director of Global Response/Environmental Action and Education Network, based in Boulder, Colorado. Juanita Sanchez and Gloria Mayorga are Bribri women who have undertaken many efforts to defend and preserve their people's way of life and their magnificent forests. They live in the KekoLdi Indigenous Reserve on Costa Rica's Atlantic coast.

Books are a gateway drug. It starts out innocently enough, reading C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, pretty soon you are reading harder stuff like Kerouac and Burroughs, the next thing you know you're strung out on Bukowski and DeSade, worrying about the Patriot Act and Free Speech, and joining the ACLU. If books are your drug of choice, Last Word has your fix!
