Book Description: 1859. With Sixty-Four Illustrations from Original Designs by John McLenan. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson and Brothers, n.d. [1859-1860]. 14 pp undated ads (integral). Original very dark brown blind-stamped cloth, with pictorial vignette in gilt at the top of the spine. Very early American edition of one of Dickens's best-known tales, issued as a volume in Peterson's "Uniform Edition" of Dickens's works. In England, this tale appeared weekly in All The Year Round between the end of April and the end of November 1859, and also in eight-in-seven monthly parts from June through December of the same year; the book edition was issued there on 21 November. In the United States, Harper & Brothers paid for the right to issue this novel in Harper's Weekly, where it did appear serially from May 7th through December 3rd 1859, with 64 illustrations by John McLenan. T. B. Peterson of Philadelphia in turn bought the illustrations and, by arrangement with Harper's, published this first printing of the American edition "contemporaneous with the last issue of Harper's Weekly [i.e. just after December 3rd -- about two weeks after the U.K. book edition]" [Wilkins]. In fact Peterson issued an unillustrated 211-page octavo edition in wrappers a week earlier, then issued the same in cloth with 33 plates, plus a duodecimo edition, and then soon thereafter (possibly by the end of the year) this 160-page edition that has 64 illustrations integrated into the text.~This copy is in near-fine condition (light wear at the spine ends and lower fore-corners, occasional minor thumbing of the leaf margins). In our experience these first American editions by Peterson, in this condition, are quite scarce. Wilkins pp 30-31. Bookseller Inventory # 9858
