Faded brown cloth with blindstamped design on front and faded gilt titles on spine (see scan. ) Some edge, corner and surface wear. Slight cock to spine but binding is secure. ; B&W Engravings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 400 pages; Well-known collection of stories including "Jack Long; or, The Shot in the Eye," a story praised by Edgar Allen Poe. Born in Kentucky, Webber led an adventurous life. He fought in the Texas war for independence, served as a Texas Ranger, had horses stolen by Comanches, organized a company to use camels for desert travel in the West and was finally killed, fighting with the filibuster, William Walker, in Nicaragua. In between these events , he wrote several books. The first edition of Tales of the Southern Border was published in 1852. (Howes W 199.). Bookseller Inventory # 12244
