Sherman F. Mittell, Editor. Bound in red cloth-covered boards with black lettering on the front board and black and red lettering on the spine. If NHL's idea was to compete with Modern Library by undercutting them in price (this "complete and unabridged" version of selected tales by Tolstoy is priced at 25 cents on the front flap, and the back flap states "the titles below comprise the first unit of a new comprehensive home library priced low enough to fit the most modest purse"), it didnt' work, and NHL founder Mittell died an untimely death in 1942. Tolstoy's "Tales" is listed as number one among "the first unit" on the back panel of the dust jacket--in other words, this is NHL's "Lost Horizon." The front panel of the dust jacket is illustrated with a Salter woodcut. Book is square and umarked; edgewear to boards and spine ends; corners and spine ends bumped. The dust jacket is not price-clipped; chipped and edgeworn; spine is age-darkened; stain to back edge. Brodart protected. Bookseller Inventory # 004696
