Together 2 volumes in 1, contemporary quarter tan calf over marbled boards, chipped leather label on gilt-paneled spine; spine rubbed and worn, joints neatly repaired; good and sound. First published in 1801, the second title is a delightfully macabre work, originally assumed to be by Matthew Gregory "Monk" Lewis but now assumed to be a parody. "The book is gruesome, and in its illustrations even disgusting, and it seems impossible that Lewis could have had anything to do with it. Some of the ballads are too coarse and grotesque to stand comparison with any work by M. G. Lewis" (Montague Summers, A Gothic Bibliography). Seller Inventory # 58781
