About this Item

Originally 11 plates. 6 plates are missing. Non circulating ex University of California, Berkeley reference library book with some library markings. Light wear. Binding is tight, text clean. Library rebound the book into hardcover. Plates missing are 6-10 Walzer and 11-Kugeltnzerin. Someone neatly sliced out the missing prints, in 1999, while the library still had possession of the book. Fidus was the pseudonym used by German illustrator, painter and publisher Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Hoppener (1868-1948). He was a symbolist artist, whose work directly influenced the psychedelic style of graphic design of the late 1960s. Despite his enthusiasm for the Nazi Party, of which he became a member, he did not receive the support of the Nazi regime. In 1937 his work was seized and the sale of his images was forbidden. By the time he died in 1948 his art had been almost forgotten. It was rediscovered in the 1960s, and directly influenced the psychedelic concert posters. Bookseller Inventory # mon0000009942
