A near fine copy with the armorial bookplate of Patrick Horsburgh on the front free endpaper. There are three chapters of text at the beginning:Chapter I. Celtic Scotland.Chapter II. Clanship and Chiefs - Dress and Arms.Chapter III. Some Characteristics of the Highlanders."This Book has been produced to meet a rapidly increasing demand, both at home and abroad, for a high class work on "The Tartans of Scotland." Several good works have already been published on the subject, but they are now rarely to be met with, and can only be purchased at long intervals, and at greatly enhanced prices. Tartan, the use of which in former times was confined to the Highlanders of Scotland, is now worn, more or less, over all the world. Many of the patterns are very beautiful, and are now manufactured in all qualities; from the strong, rough plaid and kilt of the gillie to the finest silk, satin, or velvet for the dress of a lady. All tastes can be accommodated as to colours; from the gay, almost white, Tartan of the Royal Dress Stewart to the sombre dress of the Black Watch. With regard to the accuracy of the various Tartans represented, in all cases specimens of the actual cloth have been procured, and faithfully reproduced thread by thread, so that they may be relied on as perfect pictures of the Tartans of Scotland as worn at the present day. The introductory matter, comprised in three chapters, gives a brief history of Celtic Scotland from the earliest times - Clanship and Chiefs, their dress and arms, and the characteristics of the Highlanders. This is from the graphic pen of Mr James Grant, who has also written the Historical Notes descriptive of each Clan, in which his thorough knowledge of Highlanders and the Highlands has been of eminent service. The Illuminated Arms of the Chief of Clans have been taken from the most reliable authorities, and no expense has been spared to make the work worthy of the subject. Edinburgh, Dec. 1885." (Preface).
