About this Item

Broad and colorful caricatures of the theatrical demimonde of Belle Epoque Paris, circa 1900. Scarce, with only two copies located on OCLC FirstSearch. (Bibliotheque National de France, U. of Rochester.) 34 by 24 cm. 23 leaves of illustration, with 20 color plates, of which three are double paged, plus two pages of text by Wolff. The caricatures are of theatrical personalities of the day, including performers, composers, and most famously to us now, Willy and Colette. The unifying theme would appear to be that they were all patrons or habitues of the restaurant, Au Restaurant de la Madeleine. Some of the people depicted are identified, such as the musicians Ernest Depre, Willy Redstone and Fragson; the actor and writer George Grossmith, the playwright Paul Ardot. Others were surely well-known in their day but obscure now. As with all well-done caricature, though, knowing the subject's identity is not really critical to delighting in the image. In this folio, the sequence of images, among other things, transports us back to a certain time and setting with the alacrity commensurate with the artist's sure and economic brush. Indeed, from an artistic perspective, Rip, the artist, discards all the fussiness that entered into much other caricature up to then and in his day. Dating, surely between 1900 and 1910, and probably towards the earlier end of that decade, is based on the fact Willy and Colette divorced in 1906, among other things. Soiling to the boards. Ribbon ties are gone. Tear to folio's paper spine -- the boards are not attached to anything either. Plates are clean. Bookseller Inventory # 003192

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
