About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Stewart, Gail B.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 8 Up-After giving brief historical background on the treatment of children born with disabilities, Stewart then documents interviews with four teens with physical problems. Each of the young people has had the support of family members or other caregivers, as opposed to the instant institutionalization of the past. Dennis suffers from congestive heart failure, is blind in one eye, and has asthma. He has already had surgery 12 times. Patrick has arthrogryposis, or AMC, which prevents the muscles from developing normally. Angie was born with cerebral palsy; Cindy has muscular dystrophy. The predominant attitude of each interviewee is a positive outlook on life, with the desire and expectation of becoming active, useful members of society. This well-done, informal approach allows readers to bond with these individuals. Black-and-white photos of the teens appear on every other page. A useful and approachable book for research or general reading.-Kim Harris, Newman Riga Library, Churchville, NY
