8°, original beige printed wrappers (foxed and slightly chipped). Browned; first 2 leaves foxed. Overall in good condition. Author's signed ("António de Macedo Papança") six-line presentation inscription on the half-title to the Visconde de Coruche. 109 pp. *** FIRST EDITION of these two poems by a noted poet and distinguished writer, which were inspired by the Marquês de Pombal's centenary in 1882. The first is on the Marquês de Pombal, the second on the Jesuits.The first Conde de Monsaraz (1852-1913), a noted poet and distinguished writer, was born at Reguengos de Monsaraz (Évora) and earned his law degree from the University of Coimbra in 1874. With the publication of Crepusculares (1876) and Catarina de Ataída (1880), he established a reputation as one of the best lyric poets of his day. In the 1880s he became involved with the Progressive Party and was elected deputy for the Alentejo. A fervent monarchist, he went into voluntary exile after the Republic was proclaimed, only returning to Lisbon shortly before his death.Provenance: Caetano da Silva Luz, 1º Visconde de Coruche (1842-1904), large landholder in the Ribatejo, was a major force for the advancement of agricultural science in Portugal.
