Biographical note: Morse, a portrait painter, was intrigued by the possible use of the recently discovered magneto-electricity as a means of recording intelligence at a distance. For five years he worked on crude models, then in 1837, he sought financial assistance and a patent from the U.S. government. On February 21, 1838, his instrument was demonstrated before the President and Cabinet and a bill to appropriate $30,000 for an experimental line was introduced in congress. by a narrow margin of eight votes the bill was passed in 1843 and a line from Washington to Baltimore was immediately begun. On May 24, 1844, the first message was tapped out by Morse in Washington to his assistant, Alfred Vail, in Baltimore. Size: Facsimile Bound Reprint Edition. Bookseller Inventory #
