About this title

Synopsis:

Entries include the theme title, composers, performer, release date, record title and label, if the theme was used in another medium, and more, and contains TV theme trivia and quizzes

From Booklist:

While this book will not help the reference librarian who encounters someone humming a few bars of a theme and asking that it be identified, it will prove useful for answering such questions as, What's the title of the theme from Quick Draw McGraw? or Did anyone ever record the theme from Dark Shadows?

Arranged alphabetically by program title, each entry notes whether the theme was used in other media (radio or film); dates; theme title; composers; performer of the theme; recording format; record title, label, and number; release date; and whether it is instrumental or vocal. Gelfand includes a list of abbreviations in the introduction; it would be useful to have them as running footers. "TV Theme Trivia" and "TV Theme Quizzes" are scattered throughout the book. The introduction includes a brief bibliography of books that "contain information on various aspects of television, music, and recordings supplemental to the material in this volume."

Appendixes list the top-10 most-recorded TV themes; composers of the most number of different recorded themes; themes that have reached the popular-music charts, beginning with "Woody Woodpecker Song" in 1948; original soundtracks and original cast recordings; recordings that have the same title as a theme or program, but that are not from TV shows (for example, the Rodgers and Hart standard "Bewitched" ); a list of soundtrack LPs that do not contain the program's themes; themes recorded by a regular cast member; and themes used for spinoffs, revivals, and sequels. Gelfand also offers a basic LP collection for those wishing to begin collecting TV theme recordings. Finally, there is a list of Grammy award winners.

Indexes by composer and by recording artist refer users to the program titles. The recording-artist index contains cross-references; for example, under Boston Pops Orch are citations to Arthur Fiedler and John Williams. A third index lists the title of themes and cites the program. For example, the entry "When You Wish upon a Star" cites both Disneyland and The Wonderful World of Disney.

There are some minor errors. Although an album cover showing a recording of "Hawaiian Eye" is pictured, there is no listing for the program. There is no entry for "Cover Up." However, these are slight problems. Television Theme Recordings will be useful in public libraries and academic libraries supporting performing-arts curricula.
