Synopsis: This collection of interviews celebrates women's participation in national and private expeditions to Antarctica. Based on 130 interviews the book ranges across the first women scientists to visit Macquarie Island in 1959, to contemporary 'winterers'. Given the extent to which men have traditionally marked out the territory, physically, socially and psychologically, how do women experience an Antarctic stay, what attracts them to remote places, and how do they depict the stunning beauty of Antarctica itself. Who are they, how do they speak of their work and their experiences, and what are the effects on their lives of working in Antarctica? Robin Burns has not only talked to women from many different backgrounds in order to answer such questions, but has also been a summer expeditioner herself to gain authentic experience of her subject. The result is a comprehensive account of women in Antarctic expeditions.

From Booklist: About 400 women have been on Antarctic expeditions in roles ranging from scientists to radio operators to support staff for short stints or long winters. Yet little is known about their contributions to the exploration of this extremely remote and harsh environment. Burns conducted 130 interviews with women from all over the world working on the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE). Burns begins with the sparse history of women traveling to Antarctica, mostly defined by their relationships to men as wives, lovers, or daughters, and then traces the evolution of women going to Antarctica as colleagues and workers. Burns reports on the variety of the women's work and experiences as well as the hardships of the social and geographic conditions they endure. Burns notes the "element of personal odyssey" about each person's journey and the particular challenges for women: the heavily male-dominated culture, performance anxiety, lack of privacy. Still, the accounts show women seeking adventurous lives beyond the restrictions of more civilized climes in an environment of arresting beauty and isolation. Vanessa Bush
