About this Item

first and only edition and printing (not stated); from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with Gilbert's inscription on the ffep, corners rubbed, heel of spine bumped, top edge darkened, bottom edge rubbed in one area, about 1.5 cm on a side, else clean, square, and little used, overall rating VG; dj is rubbed, shows some damp spots, has numerous small tears (the largest about 2 cm) and nicks, else largely intact with colors still bright, overall rating Fair+; this book was published early in Heath's career, before she became known as one of the most able female sociolinguists in the U.S.; this hard-to-find book would interest collectors of her work, per se, as well as those interested in the development of American sociolinguistics in the second half of the twentieth century; I personally have had a special interest in her work; she and Charles Ferguson were the co-editors of 'Language in the USA', from the 1980s, which contained my chapter on French and German in the United States, an essay that I prize as being representative of my best work; hard covers are blue with gold lettering on the spine, the publisher's logo at the bottom; the handsome dj is brown with turquoise-colored decorative designs and black and white lettering, a black and white photo of the young author on the back flap; 8vo -- 233 millimeters tall, xx + 300 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
