About this Item

Six cropped sheets measuring 145 by 95 mm, engraved and hand-colored. The panels depict the interior of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam, showing the congregation at prayer. Martin Engelbrecht was a German engraver and printseller who created "miniature theatres," where a series of engraved, cut-out cards could be inserted into a holder to create a three-dimensional scene. Engelbrecht's creations are thought to be the earliest paper theaters, a precursor to the popular accordion-fold peep shows of the nineteenth century. The Amsterdam synagogue is one of the rarer scenes in Engelbrecht's Théatre des Enfants series, and many of the finer details, such as the four delicate candlesticks in the front panel, are intact. The set is housed in the likely original folded paper envelope with the title, "Eine Synagoge" in manuscript on the front panel. (Gumuchian 3249). Bookseller Inventory # 27238
